:*{{para|nation}} – Use either the name of the nation or the three-letter [[ISO 3166-1 alpha-3]] country code.  Be sure that the country name is appropriate for the specific dates, by checking [[Wikipedia:WikiProject Ships/Ensigns]].
:*{{para|variant}} (optional) – Specifies the flag to use.  This parameter is documented by the appropriate template in [[:Category:Country data templates]].  For many countries, setting this field to {{code|naval}} parameter will select the naval ensign, but for civil ships, this parameter may be omitted.
